Texito Langa | Mozambique

Since a young age, Texito took a great interest in music. In 1984 his father enrolled him at the local music school in Maputo. Ras Vino PIC

Ras Vino "A-xikunda" | Mozambique

Ras Vino Materula discovered reggae through his fathers' record collection including artists like Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, Sly and Robbie. The lyrics reflected aspects of the situation in Mozambique of widespread poverty and injustice. As a result he became increasingly conscious of the deeper roots and causes of the impoverishment and abuse of Mother Afrika.

He began learning and jamming guitar and voice with international Mozambican musicians such as Mila Mabote, Sammy Lee, Aristides Manhique, Zoko and Texito Langa. Reggae music became a life mission. Ras Vino’s intention is to remind people about Jah works, their purpose in life, to promote Afrikan Unity and Afrikan consciousness. This is reflected in the name A-xikunda which means “mystic warriors or gifted warriors”. A-xikunda has made a name for itself within the Reggae scene in Mozambique performing regularly in Maputo from 1997-2005 and in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town since 2005 including Moshito conference in 2008 alongside acts from Zimbabwe and Malawi.
